Which products are Best for YOU?
Shopping for skin care products has become more & more confusing, with all the new product lines and claims of skin renewal.
Let's start with the process of elimination......What do YOU really need?
First off, products claiming to reverse the signs of aging, put them back on the shelf. That's why we have surgery, do fillers, get Botox and use retina. Concentrate on anti-aging prevention. You can not turn back the clock.....sorry.
Products that claim they can remove cellulite and firm your skin - Get your money back. Products that do well for your face will also work for your neck, decollete and hands.
Just because it's more expensive and Cleopatra used it, is of no consequence. Look for products containing retinol, vitamins, lactic acids.
Serums help soothe irritated skin such as roscea and sensitive skin types. It is not necessary to then top off with a moisturizer. One or the other. Less is usually better.
If you are in the habit of over cleansing and continually stripping your skin of all it's natural oils, you may cause your skin to actually produce more oils, including bacteria and clogged pores. Stick to the basics, Cleanse, Tone, Hydrate for dry skin or use Serum for sensitive, irritated skin. Exfoliate 1-2 times per week and eye creams are helpful.

Wondering what foods provide us with best eats for our skin? B complexes, Niacin, Vitamins A, E, & C. Foods with omega, zinc. Foods to help with the distribution of collagen, moisturizer, roscea. Foods high in antioxidants? Get you shopping list ready!
Avocados are high on the list for B complex vitamins and niacin. Great for red blotchy skin.
Mangoes are full of vitamin A. Helping to repair damaged skin cells.
Almonds Contain vitamin E. Rich in oils, maintaining skin moisture and healthy complexion.
Cottage Cheese contains a nutrient called Selenium. This along with vitamin E contains antioxidants that help fight skin cancer.
Acerola Cherries rich in vitamin C. Helping to win the war against skin damage & wrinkles. Aids in the production of collagen.
Oysters are rich in zinc and help fight against pimples.
Baked Potatoes supply copper to aid in elastin fibers that support skin structure.
Sweet Potatoes contain beta carotene which helps protect the skin from sun exposure.

Blepharoplasty or Brow lift?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and muscle from both the upper and lower eyelids along with underlying fatty tissue. Blepharoplasty can improve drooping skin and bagginess. It can help improve vision in older patients who have hooding of their upper eyelids. Although it can add an upper eyelid crease to the Asian eyelid, it will not erase evidence of one's racial or ethnic heritage. Blepharoplasty will not remove "crows feet" or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under the eyes or lift sagging eyebrows.
Brow lift. The forehead and eyebrow region often show noticeable signs of aging. Looseness in these structures may cause drooping eyebrows, eyelid hooding, forehead furrows, and frown lines. In brow lift surgery, the structures responsible for these problems are tightened or altered to smooth the forehead, raise the upper eyebrows, and improve frown lines. A brow lift may be performed alone, or in conjunction with other procedures, such as a face lift, or eyelid surgery.
It's very important to understand which surgery would benefit you most.For example; If you had a Blepharoplasty and had really needed a Brow lift your eyes would look worse with 99% chance they could not be corrected. On the other hand, if you had a brow lift and needed a Blepharoplasty, you would end up with that surprised lifted look to your brows and still maintain the hooded eyelids.
In order for you to know what would work best is simple. Look at yourself in the mirror. Is your eyebrow is resting on your brow bone? Then chances are you may be in need of only a blepharoplasty. If your eyebrow however, is resting below your brow bone, chances are you may need a brow lift. And then there are always the instances where you need both. If when lifting your eyebrows manually with your fingers you find the hooding over your eyelids have not receded, chances are that you may need both the Brow lift and Blepharoplasty.
Brow lifts are now done Endoscopically. That means no more large incisions! You will have three small incisions, no more than one inch in diameter in your hairline, and depending on your surgeons preference you may have three small screws or three dissolvable velcro pads inserted.
As with all surgeries there is always the risk of bleeding, infection, scarring, skin contour irregularities, change in skin sensation & blindness. And as with all surgeries>>>> Make sure your doctor is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Have this Board Certified Plastic Surgeon show you before and after pictures of his work. Ask him questions. Get a list of patients that he/she has operated on and call them. This is your face, do your homework.
This surgery will last you a lifetime.

12 MONTH SKIN CARE CALENDER
January, February, March = Dry Skin Season.
Moisturizing is key. Using a moisturizer that is oil based preferably with glycerine, rather than a water based moisturizer.
Heating systems also dry our skin, use humidifiers to add more moisture into the air. Avoid harsh chemical peels or alcohol based toners. Wash with warm water rather than hot and avoid steam so not to create lipid barriers from breaking down.
Make sure to moisturize at least twice daily, drink plenty of water and visit your aesthetician for hydrating facials.
April, May = Spring cleaning!
Time to rid ourselves of that dry, rough, dull skin. Microdermabrasions or chemical peels, (ask your aesthetician which is right for you) will remove that extra layer that our skin maintains during the winter months as a protectant and will allow the new & fresh skin to come forth.
Hair removal starts now. Blonde hair can be easily & painlessly removed every 4 weeks by a procedure called dermalplanning. Dermalplanning also exfoliates dead skin cells.
This is a good time to add a refining scrub twice weekly to your skin care regimen. This will help keep your skin soft & bright.
Make sure to understand the difference between sunblock and sunscreen. Sunblock worn daily will clog your pores and is to be used on a high sun exposure day. Sunscreen is for daily use and if used after toner should not clog your pores.
Do's Oranges...help shrink pore size. Squeeze fresh oranges on a cotton ball, wipe your face. Berries...any and all, especially blackberries help with antioxidants. Wear sunglasses to avoid squinting and UV rays. Cucumbers to your eyes will avoid puffiness and swelling. PH balanced toner frequently to help control pores....keep it with you.
Don't use straws while drinking that cool tropical drink, it creates wrinkles over your lip. Avoid microdermabrasion, chemical peels unless, you are able to avoid sun exposure. You will be at risk for hyperpigmentation.
Less makeup frees up more time. Try brow tints, lash tints or eyelash extensions
October, November, December = Holiday and correct.
Underneath that gorgeous tan is probably alot of dead skin. Microdermabrasions, Chemical peels may be needed once again to turn over skin that has been damaged and is in desperate need of oxygen, blood flow and collagen distribution.

SUN AND CLEANSE
The warm weather is upon us, and whether we are going to the beach, planting, or just enjoying the outdoor activites our skin, ( our body glove ) is most likely starting to feel and look like a worn glove. Steam opens your pores and allows them to breath. When we are outdoors in this warm climate our pores open, and our sweat glands produce more moisture. This moisture travels into those opened pores and that sweat becomes dirt and bacteria. Hello blackheads! Dirt and bacteria enjoy spreading themselves around and where there is one blackhead there are several others coming to visit you in the same area. In plain terms, blackheads spread.
You may say, "I use sunblock or sunscreen" Great! But unless the sunscreen or sunblock you are using is face specific the clogging effects are a guarantee. Would you use the same body wash on your face? I would hope not, hopefully you would use a facial wash. The same goes for your sun protectant. It needs to be made specifically for the face. Why not go an extra step, take a small plastic bag, fill it with a few cotton balls, squeeze some toner on them and apply prior to reapplying your sun protectant, the difference will be definately visible.
Tans are glorious. They make us all look healthy plus vitamin D is a very important nutrient that our body needs. Babies get their vitamin D from milk and foods that have sufficient vitamin D to keep their organs and bones healthy. However as we age, we need more of those vitamins. Unfortunatley, some of us drift away from those essential vitamins in our everyday diet and 20 minutes of sunshine a day is vital for adults to maintain healthy organs and bone. Therefore, I would never advise anyone to completely avoid the sun.
This is the time of year that facials are vital. Make sure to see your Aesthetician on regular basis during the next several months so that they can help you in keeping any unneccesary blackheads from manifesting themselves all over your perfectly tanned face.

Often times I get asked the same question over and over again...."What can I do about my pores?" Let's first start off with what most of us already know, and that is a pore is a small opening in the skin, which left untreated will consistently fill itself with sebum. Microdermabrasions, certain types of chemical peels like salicylic and benzoyl peroxide washes help shrink the size of pores. When having facials add a high frequency treatment to your service.The high frequency treatment employs an electrical current below the skin which will kill any potential bacteria from forming allowing the pore to close rather than fill. This treatment is not expensive nor unpleasant, just be sure not to be wearing any metal in the surrounding area, such as piercings or jewlery.
Diet is also helpful, and by diet you only need to increase your acid intake such as more oranges, lemons and pineapple. The acid in these delicious fruits also aid in shrinking pores as well as, tightening your skin!
Anyone that knows me will tell you that I can be quoted as saying "Toner, Toner!" Sometimes our skin is just out of whack, therefore a PH balanced toner in our regimen is essential. After washing your face with warm water, which opens our pores allowing us to clean them, it is imperative that you apply a small amount of toner onto a cotton ball and rub your face down PRIOR to applying any type of product no matter how great that product claims to be. If not, the face you have just washed and the pores you have just cleansed and have not yet closed, are now filled again with products. You must wash, close the pore with toner and then apply your choices of creams, makeup or sunscreen. On days that you are sweating or just hot, remember, heat opens pores, keep them clean and closed with Toner. If you are prone to breakouts then, carry toner and cotton balls with you. I promise you will see a difference.

Lavender's Lair HOT TOPIC FOR MARCH...Breast Augmentation Saline or Silicone. Most frequently asked questions.
Are they safe? Yes.
Are you able to breast feed afterwards? Yes ( although, placement through the aereola my conflict with breast feeding ).
Are you at risk for losing sensation? Possibly, but chances are increased if placement is through the aereola.
Where is the safest and best location for implant placement and why? I personally believe that the safest area to place the implants is the inframmary crease, otherwise directly underneath your breast at the fold. Placing the implants through the armpit leads to the implants gravatating to the side because they will typically migrate back to the original incision site leaving less cleavage. As well as your lymph nodes are in that area and not a great idea to cut into them. Placement through the areola tends to lead to a larger risk of infection, poor scarring, loss of nipple sensation and disturbs the milk glands. If and when implants need to be exchanged they are removed through the inframmary crease, so why not start there?
Is it true that you need to replace them every ten years? No. If it's not broken leave them alone! Typically the idea is for you to replace them prior to the manufacturers warranty runs out. But if they are not ruptured the manufacturer will not replace them anyway. With Saline it would be best to purchase the extended warranty package that the manufacturer offers.
How long do implants typically last? Saline implants, unfortunately are very unpredictable and I have witnessed situations where they have ruptured in two years and have also seen patients continue on with them for as long as 12 years. The key is to understand going into this, that it is NOT a one time surgery. Silicone implants however now outlast the saline almost indefinitely and should have a life time warranty. Therefore the extended warranty really isn't needed.
How safe are implants? Both Saline and Silicone implants are safe. Saline implants are filled with saline which our bodies naturally consist of anyway. Therefore if the implants were to rupture our body just naturally filters the saline through our bodies system with no ill effect. Silicone ( the gummie bears ) are no longer the free flowing silicone with the thin casing that when it did rupture traveled throughout our breast and encapsulated all the tissue it came into contact with. Now the new "Gummie bear" silicone implants are a cohesive (solid) which means that you can actually cut one in half and you then have two solid halves, no liquid filling to travel. Therefore, no ruptures.
Which implant gives you more of a natural looking breast? That would be silicone. It tends to give you more of a tear drop effect. Saline implants tend to look firmer.
What are the negatives to breast implants? Capsular contractions. Which means scar tissue has grown in excess around the implant compressing it, shifting it, causing discomfort and making the breast feel abnormally hard. What happens is that our body heals itself ( fortunately ) so, when we have a cut or a wound our body naturally repairs itself. When we create a pocket within our chest wall to place an implant, our body may recognize that as a wound and feel it needs to repair, therefore growing scar tissue over the implant itself. Breast compressions are crucial! Make sure that you press your implant into your chest medially DAILY & forever. Think of it as a piercing that may close in a week or in a year or never, the body is unpredictable. And as with all surgeries the risk for infections and poor wound healing is always possible.
And last and most important.....do not take this surgery lightly. Do your homework! Make sure your doctor is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.

Lavender's Lair FEBRUARY'S HOT TOPIC "Collagen"
What is collagen? Collagen is a fibrous protein found in the extracellular matrix and consists in about 1/4 of your body. It is used to connect and support other body tissues. Without it, the body should literally fall apart.
Collagen works hand in hand with elastin for firmness and strength. Blood vessels and keratin rely on collagen. As aging occurs collagen degradation occurs leading to wrinkles.
What is the cure for collagen degradation, the answer is stimulation! In my years as a skin care professional it is very obvious to me the people who started skin care fairly young by having facials done every three months. The difference in their skin is that the collagen is used to being stimulated and never became dormant therefore still leaving the fibrous tissue plumped. Facials are key to oxygen and blood flow which in turn stimulates the fibrous tissue to awaken the collagen.
For those who are getting the later jump start in collagen distribution, there are several fillers in the market that work wonders in plumbing out those lines and wrinkles, and of course there is always the facelift. Hopefully it's not to late for you to start today with a massaging facial.
